Highland Games season off to a sunny start at Markinch
ByCheryl Peebles
Markinch kicked off Fife’s Highland game season in fine style on Sunday.
Good weather drew a large crowd to John Dixon Park for the event, which hosts the oldest pipe contest in Scotland.
A highlight of the day was the heavy events, which included the 28lb weight for distance, shot putt, throwing the hammer and tossing the caber.
Spectators were also treated to seeing four games records broken.
There was also a busy programme of Highland dancing and athletics events.Photo gallery: Markinch Highland GamesChildren and their parents had their time in the arena, too, with a series of fun races for all ages.
Presiding as chieftain was Jack Harley, president of Markinch Bowling Club, which celebrates its 150th anniversary this year.
Bringing the games to a close was the traditional Grand March Past, featuring the pipe bands.
