A man who set off on a drunken rampage through a hospital, kicking a doctor and pushing beds into the path of police officers, has been jailed for 10 months.
Christopher Carsewell rushed to Ninewells Hospital’s Accident and Emergency Department believing his pregnant girlfriend was there and, when he was told she wasn’t, reacted in a “totally unacceptable” way.
The court heard Carsewell, 28, of Campbells Close, Ogilvies Road, arrived at A&E in the early hours.
Depute fiscal Charmaine Gilmartin said: “The accused turned up about 3.15am and immediately was aggressive towards staff and was agitated. He believed his pregnant partner was within A&E and was demanding to see her.”
She continued: “When the reception staff told him she wasn’t there he stormed past the reception area, past the waiting area and went into the treatment area. At that time there were patients within the treatment area and their families.”
The court heard he began opening curtains into private treatment areas where there were patients including children and elderly people.
The court heard Carsewell then attempted to get into another part of the hospital and a doctor blocked the door.
Ms Gilmartin said: “She tried to put her hands on him and prevent him getting through and he shouted ‘get your hands off me or I’ll kill you’. He then proceeded to kick the doctor on the leg.”
Police were contacted and Carsewell tried to get away.
Ms Gilmartin continued: “He pushed beds into the path of the officers while they were in pursuit of him, shouting and swearing while that was going on.”
When officers eventually apprehended him the court heard he violently lashed out with his arms and legs.
Carsewell admitted that, on July 29, at the A&E Department of Ninewells Hospital, he behaved in a threatening or abusive manner, shouted and swore and uttered threats of violence.
He admitted that he entered restricted areas and opened curtains to treatment bays. He also admitted assaulting, obstructing or hindering Kirsten Tonge, a doctor employed there, and kicking her on the leg. He further admitted resisting, obstructing or hindering Constables Dale Evans and Donna Smith in an attempt to resist arrest.
Carsewell was jailed for 10 months to run from July 30.
