A Montrose councillor fears tennis courts in Hillside could close after a public rallying call largely fell on deaf ears.
David May received only two calls after he went public on his desire to save the courts, but now wants to give it one last push before throwing in the towel.
Mr May wants to see the eyesore courts given a new lease of life with the sport firmly back in the spotlight in the wake of Andy Murray’s historic win at Wimbledon.
He said getting the court back up and running would be a positive move in the fight against obesity Mr May told The Courier: “Unfortunately, I have had only two calls from people who are interested in saving the courts and would be willing to help.
“However, if we are to save the courts from permanent closure there is a need for more to come forward now or otherwise the courts will close permanently, which is a great pity.
“I am willing to do what I can to help but people must let me know very soon or the courts will close.”
Mr May remains hopeful of setting up a group to look at ways of accessing funding, and Angus Council is backing his efforts.
He said the courts have proved to be very popular over many years and it would be a great pity if they were now closed.
Mr May was made aware by Hillside Tennis Club’s chairman that the courts had not reopened this year and that the council had not been upgrading their surface in recent years.
As a result, he made contact with the council officers about this and was informed that the cost of repairing the fence ran into thousands of pounds.
There are possibilities of accessing external funding, but only if a local group can be set up. Murray mania has led to an upsurge in those wanting to take to tennis courts across Courier Country.
