The SNP’s band of 56 MPs has arrived at Westminster including the Angus woman who defeated Jim Murphy.
As the new group familiarised themselves with the House of Commons, the county’s provost Helen Oswald spoke of her pride at daughter Kirsten ousting the Scottish Labour leader from his East Renfrewshire seat.
The Angus provost and husband Ed joined Kirsten at last week’s count and celebrated with her afterwards following the win by 3,728 votes.
Mrs Oswald said: “We are very pleased for her and very proud of her. She fought an excellent campaign and had a fantastic team working with her.”
Mrs Oswald said Kirsten born in Dundee, raised in Carnoustie and moved to East Renfrewshire in 2008 “was never one to take the easy route”.
It is the beginning of a new era at Westminster with a majority government for the first time in five years and more Nationalist MPs representing Scotland than ever before.
Kirsten said: “Thank you to everyone who voted and to those who have sent messages of support and encouragement.
“I am determined to represent every person in East Renfrewshire to the very best of my ability, and I look forward to getting down to work.”
Angus Robertson, reappointed as Westminster group leader unchallenged, said the MPs “will be the strongest voice possible for Scotland”.
He insisted the SNP could now expect to enjoy far greater influence in the UK parliament, despite a Conservative majority.
He said: “It’s hugely exciting because, of course, what the SNP is now at Westminster is the third party and that really matters at Westminster.
“It means that we will be able to stand up for Scotland with much greater regularity, both in terms of Prime Minister’s Questions and in every debate, every statement.”
