Arbroath v Rangers: Lichties hope to blow Gers off course with a little help from the elements

Rangers last enjoyed the Gayfield experience in the Scottish Cup in January 2012.

Arbroath’s Alex Keddie is hoping the winds of change can sweep across Gayfield tonight and halt Rangers’ usual winning ways in League One.

Ally McCoist’s side have not dropped a point so far, with a relentless run of victories that sees them sitting in splendid isolation at the top of the table.

Arbroath, in contrast, have been struggling, with only three league wins to their name.

Nevertheless, Keddie is hoping that a wild and windy Gayfield could prove to be a culture shock to some of Rangers’ players and help the Red Lichties secure a result against all the odds.

He said: “I’d imagine the Rangers players won’t have seen anything like this. The Scottish ones will know what to expect but the guys from further afield will get a shock.

“The pitch at Gayfield is always good, that’s no problem, but the temperature has plummeted in the last few days. And it will seem about 10 degrees colder when that wind machine from the North Sea starts cranking up.

“You can’t say until the game starts but they are very professional and have been winning games for fun so they’ll come to our place with plenty of confidence.”

Last season, Arbroath ran Celtic close in a Scottish Cup replay at Gayfield, only losing to a solitary Adam Matthews’ wonder strike.

Keddie insists that if they can recreate that level of performance again against Rangers, then they are capable of causing an upset.

He said: “We played very well against Celtic last season so that gives us loads of hope. In the home game we had chances and I think when you play the Old Firm that’s something you’ll get.

“Obviously you have to defend well because half a chance is enough for them to score with. Rangers have the likes of Jon Daly, who has been superb for them this season, but they have quality all over the park.”
