Dundee has the highest chance in Britain of a white Christmas, according to the latest odds from Ladbrokes.
The high-street betting chain has issued odds for 12 cities across the UK and Ireland, with odds of 5/2 that Dundee will get a dusting of the white stuff on Christmas Day.
The only other two Scottish cities listed in Ladbrokes’ table Edinburgh and Glasgow have a slightly lower chance with odds of 7/2, giving them the same possibility of snow as Londoners, according to the bookmaker.
The company has also issued odds of 4/1 for Birmingham, Cardiff, Dublin and Leeds, while Cork has odds of 5/1.
Jessica Bridge, of Ladbrokes, said the odds were calculated by studying Met Office weather forecasts.
“We look at their long-term forecasts, like studying the form and the stats,” she explained.
“However, because it’s a month away still and the weather could change in a day in truth it’s an educated guess.”
Dan Williams from the Met Office said looking at climatological data could help predict what the weather might be like on December 25.
“Looking at days of sleet or snowfall gives an indication of which places get more or less snow. Dundee’s always at the higher end. The lowest places are around the coastline in areas such as Cornwall.”
According to the Met Office’s map of average days of sleet and snowfall in December, Dundee lies in the area where between four and 10 days of snow or sleet are normal.
The map reflects data that has been collected between 1971 and 2000. Dan added that the Met Office’s long-term outlook reveals that this December could be colder than normal.
“There are indications that temperatures are likely to remain below average for the time of year,” he said.
“The wetter and windier weather is more likely in the north and west.”
