A man who put a woman in hospital by throwing a glass at her head had an “appalling record for domestic violence,” Dundee Sheriff Court has heard.
On Monday David Boyd, 46, of Foundry Lane, Dundee, was sentenced to six months in prison after admitting the assault that caused blood to run down his victim’s face and on to her clothes.
Depute fiscal Trina Sinclair told the court the pair had been in a volatile on-off relationship for a number of years and there had been a number of reported incidents.
The court heard that the day before the incident Boyd had told his victim he wanted to end their relationship so he could see another woman.
However, after drinking at the victim’s house the next day he asked her for sex and she refused.
Ms Sinclair said: “He picked up a glass tumbler full of cider and threw it, hitting the complainer on the head.
“The complainer felt blood running down her face and on to her clothing.”
The court heard the victim told a witness she had fallen and the three of them went to Ninewells Hospital where she was advised she would need to wait and get stitches.
However the woman declined and the three went back to drinking together until another witness arrived and saw the bandage on the woman’s head.
Ms Sinclair said: “He asked what happened and she told him the accused had lost the plot and hit her with a tumbler.
“The accused refused to leave and at that time police were contacted.”
Defence solicitor Mike Boyle said: “Despite this quite serious incident they are still drinking together and carrying on as normal.”
Sheriff Michael Wood told Boyd: “There is really very little I can say. Your record is appalling record for domestic violence.
“There is no excuse. You are simply unable to control yourself. There is no alternative than to send you back to prison again.”
