Householders across Kirkcaldy have been warned to secure their homes after an “alarming rise” in the number of sneak-in thefts.
Police have stepped up patrols in communities throughout the town following a spate of incidents carried out by what are believed to be opportunist thieves.
Kirkcaldy community safety officer Mark Anderson said residents could take some simple steps to protect themselves.
“The last couple of weeks has seen an alarming rise in the number of sneak-in thefts to sheds and houses throughout the Kirkcaldy area,” he said.
“Keep your belongings safe and out of sight. Always secure your doors and windows no matter how short a time you might be away, and use good quality locks on your sheds and outbuildings,” the officer advised.
One person has already been traced in connection with sneak-in thefts but PC Anderson warned that the arrival of better weather will present further opportunities for thieves to strike.
“If you are working in the back garden, ensure that the front door is locked and the windows are secure,” he added.
“If you have to leave the garden for a short time, make sure that the back of the house is secure. The sneak-in thief, or opportunist thief, only needs a few seconds to take advantage of an open door or window.”
