The search for a St Andrews University lecturer missing on Skye was suspended on Thursday as hopes fade for his safe return.
Oliver Smith, 33, has been missing since Saturday when he went walking in the Cuillins carrying a small rucksack.
A full-scale operation involving a coastguard helicopter, the RAF, Civil Air Patrol, search dogs and local mountain rescue teams failed to find any trace of Mr Smith after four days of searching.
For the first time since first light on Sunday, there was no major search yesterday.
A police spokeswoman said: “Inquiries are ongoing and there are further planned searches this weekend involving local mountain rescue teams.”
Mr Smith, who lives with his partner Shelly and baby daughter in Cupar, is a lecturer in Russian.
The family were on the west coast island for a weekend break when Mr Smith set off to climb the munro Bla Bheinn on his own.
The alarm was raised when he failed to return to his accommodation in the evening.
His role at the university includes teaching Russian language and literature, and supporting students spending a year abroad.
St Andrews students past and present contacted student-run newspaper the Saint to express their concern.
Former student Nick Self said: “I truly hope he returns to the job he so obviously loves sooner rather than later, and my thoughts are with his family in what must be an unimaginably terrible time.”
