A former Angus man and his wife have died in a ferocious fire at their home in England.

William and Eileen Volume passed away after a blaze broke out due to an electrical fault.

Mr Volume, who was born in Glen Prosen, moved down to Carlton Village, near Stockton, with his wife but continued to have close links with his native Angus. His niece Alison Irvine said the couple would be greatly missed.

“His heart was always up here and up until quite recently they came up two or three times a year,” she said.

“We are a very close family and he had a close connection with the area. They were devoted to each other. They were married in 1948.”

The couple died in the fire at their detached house in the early hours of April 4. Fire crews battled intense heat to save Mr and Mrs Volume but they were declared dead at the scene.

Results from post mortem examinations concluded they died as a result of smoke inhalation. The couple, who were both 88, were married at Careston School House, near Brechin.

Mr Volume attended Brechin High before studying maths and physics at St Andrews University. He went on to work in the development of radar during the Second World War.

Alison said the Volumes had four children together.
