Plans to convert former flax mill into homes and business areas

A 185-year-old former flax mill in Dundee could be transformed into housing and small-scale commercial work spaces if councillors back the plan.
A draft site planning brief recommends that the former Queen Victoria and Regent Works between Brook Street and Douglas Street in the Blackness area are redeveloped as high-quality homes and appropriate commercial use.
Will Dawson, convener of Dundee City Council’s city development committee, said: “This is a prominent site in the Blackness Conservation Area with an industrial past stretching back almost two centuries.
“Although the buildings are likely to be in poor structural condition we would like to see as much of the material as possible salvaged for re-use.
“The local sandstone the mill was built from, as well as the slate roof and cast iron columns, could be used in a way that reflects the building’s long manufacturing history.”
Any potential developer would have to provide at least one parking space per house and public artwork.
If the city development committee, which meets next Monday, approves the draft it will be issued for public consultation before being finalised.
