Forensic investigators spent Thursday probing the identity of human remains found in Highland Perthshire.
A walker made the grisly discovery in woodland near Loch of the Lowes nature reserve at 10am and called in police. The area was immediately cordoned off and remained the scene of police activity throughout the day.
It is understood the corpse had been in the woods for some time. Scenes of crime officers scoured the site, near the banks of the loch, for further clues to piece together the identity and last movements of the mystery person.
The condition of the body was so bad, officers could not even tell if it was that of a male or female. But they said no missing people from Tayside fitted the profile of the body and forces across Scotland will be contacted for help.
Early indications appeared to suggest there were no suspicious circumstances surrounding the death.
A spokesman for the force said: “Police Scotland are currently attending at the Loch of the Lowes at Dunkeld in Perthshire following the discovery of a human body.
“Officers were alerted by a member of the public who discovered the remains in woodland at about 10am today. It’s understood the body has been there for some time.
“The area has been cordoned off to allow further enquiry, as officers seek to establish the identity of the deceased and the full circumstances of the incident.
“A report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal in due course.”
