Police called after red card rage at Broughty Athletic match

A Dundee junior football club have apologised after a referee abandoned a cup tie and called the police after alleged threats from one of their players.
Police have launched an investigation into the chaotic scenes in the closing minutes of Broughty Athletic’s East of Scotland Cup tie against Bonnyrigg Rose at Whitton Park on Saturday.
Referee Ross McIntyre locked himself in the match officials’ room after stopping the game and walking off the pitch following an altercation with a Broughty Athletic player, who he had just sent off.
Stunned supporters then looked on as a female fan allegedly slapped Bonnyrigg Rose player Kris Renton in the face.
Spectator Kevan Christie (44) said both sets of fans were “gobsmacked”.
He said: “It’s the kind of thing you expect to see on a Sunday game between two really rough teams, but not at junior level.”
Broughty Athletic have apologised and promised a full investigation.
