Dundee City Council promises review following email blunder

Dundee City Council promises review following email blunder

An email asking to rate Dundee City Council’s complaints process has produced a complaint of its own after a blunder shared the personal details of dozens of recipients.

The authority sent out the email at the end of April asking people who had recently submitted a complaint to the council to fill in a survey.

But the message included the email addresses of 57 other people the survey link was sent to.

The council has apologised for the error and promised a review of its procedures.

Steven Laing, 51, from Lochee contacted The Courier over what he claimed was a “breach of confidentiality”.

He said: “When I looked at the heading and saw all these names, I couldn’t believe it. Someone else on that list could have used the details for other purposes. It could leave people wide open to identity theft.

“I’m quite annoyed, because I recognised two or three people on the list. It’s just not right at all.”

The email states: “In the last few months you made a complaint to Dundee City Council. We would like to know what you thought about how we dealt with your complaint. Please click on the link below to complete a short survey.

“We would be very grateful if you could do this by Wednesday 8 May 2013. Thank you very much for your assistance.”

Mr Laing said: “I had complained about the closure of the Kemback Street Centre months ago and followed the normal complaints procedure.

“I’m thinking about putting in a complaint about this itself now. I would have thought the council would have had an internal system in place that would have flagged this kind of thing up before the email goes out.”

A Dundee City Council spokesman said: “We apologise for this situation the council is looking at its procedures.”
