Hamilton Grand open to winners of ballot

The Hamilton Grand has been undergoing a multi-million-pound renovation.
The Hamilton Grand has been undergoing a multi-million-pound renovation.

Members of the public are to be given the chance to see how the other half lives thanks to the owners of one of St Andrews’ most iconic buildings.

Curious parties can enter a ballot to have a look inside the Hamilton Grand, which is undergoing a multi-million-pound renovation.

Work has been ongoing at the building for three years to transform the former student halls into 26 luxury residences.

With the building to open its doors to residents next month, its owner, Kohler Co, are to host a ballot giving a handful of people the chance to see inside what will be some of Scotland’s most luxurious homes.

Resort general manager Daniel Pereira said: “Despite its overwhelming popularity, the Old Course holds fast to tradition, retaining the traditional ballot to give golfers the opportunity to play.

“The ballot reflects the public spirit of St Andrews Links to stay as open and accessible for all golf lovers.

“It is in this open spirit that we are staging our very own ballot to provide places on a walking tour through the refurbished Hamilton Grand overlooking the Old Course’s 18th green.”

Just 36 names will be selected from the ballot for what will be a one-off tour of the building, to take place on June 20.

Built over a century ago by Thomas Hamilton, the building started life as the Grand Hotel and was the first in Scotland to offer hot and cold running water in every bathroom. It was requisitioned by the Air Ministry in the Second World War when it served as a training headquarters for the RAF, after which it was purchased by St Andrews University, acting as a halls of residence for 56 years.

The site has been a hub of activity in recent months as renovation work has been conducted on what remains one of St Andrews’ most famous landmarks.

“The building had fallen into a very sorry state of disrepair and so we embarked on what has been an incredible transformation,” added Mr Pereira.

Anyone interested in taking part should email ballot@hamiltongrand.co.uk by next Monday.
