The cafe at Levenmouth Swimming Pool is to close on Mondays in a bid to address a financial black hole.
The decision, which will see opening hours cut from 67.5 to 43 hours per week, follows the discovery the cafe has been running at an unsustainable loss for some time.
However, Fife Sports and Leisure Trust, which operates the facility, has been urged to reverse the decision, amid fears it could lead to the cafe closing completely.
The trust has already decided to close the cafe at the Beacon Leisure Centre in Burntisland and replace it with an enhanced vending machine, following financial losses.
Leven councillor Tom Adams, chairman of Levenmouth area committee, said people had not been consulted before the latest decision was made.
“I think it is disrespectful to the community of Leven and all who use the facility,” he said.
“This is a well-used facility by all ages in the Levenmouth area and I feel that reducing the hours of operation, especially at this time of year, when we are trying to attract tourists into the area, is the wrong decision and I would urge the trust to reverse this action.”
He added: “I hope Leven is not going the same way as the cafe at Burntisland Beacon Leisure Centre, which has been closed after reducing the operating hours.
“If it’s Fife Council’s policy to promote a healthier lifestyle, why are we cutting back on the hours that the cafe operates?
“The people of Levenmouth deserve better and should not be treated in this manner.”
Andy MacLellan, the council’s sports partnership manager, said: “Unfortunately, the cafe at Levenmouth Swimming Pool and Sports Centre hasn’t attracted enough customers over the past few years and has been running at a loss for some time now.
“This isn’t sustainable and the Fife Sports and Leisure Trust have had to reduce the cafe opening hours, as of July 1, in order to address this deficit. The main change is the closure of the cafe on a Monday, which is the quietest day of the week.
“The trust is in the process of communicating these changes to customers and local councillors.”
