An Angus playpark has bucked the trend of closures in the county due to a £47,000 community effort.

The Davidson Park in Southmuir, Kirriemuir, has been transformed with a warning that “no funds” exist to replace damaged equipment.

The Glamis Road site was viewed by residents as being rundown and short of play equipment for the local children in the area.

Two years ago, the Davidson Park Action Group was formed to address the needs of the park and set about planning and fundraising for better equipment with help from Angus Council.

A jubilee fun day, quiz night, bag packs and raffles were held by the community and local businesses added their support.

Chairwoman Colette Robertson said: “The support of the people of Kirriemuir has been fantastic.

“Without exception the group has experienced faith in the project and generosity, which has fuelled the group’s wish to succeed.

“The group would like to appeal for care of the equipment as if it is damaged beyond repair, there are no funds to replace it.

“Please contact local police if you spot anything untoward,” Colette said.

Awards for All and the Big Lottery Fund along with Angus Council contributed £10,000 each towards the £47,000 total.

A climbing frame with chute, pod swing, seesaw, dish roundabout, toddler springer, toddler swings, benches, goal end and basketball hoop have been installed and are already being enjoyed.

Local councillor Jeanette Gaul will cut the ribbon at a grand opening at noon on June 29. Community group DD8 Music will attend and there will be stalls and a bouncy castle.

The group would like to thank everyone for their support and enthusiasm and belief in the project.

Along with many local business, supporters for the project have included Karen Soutar’s Dancers, DD8 Music, Kirriemuir Scouts, Angus Council environmental services and parks department, Graeme Hodge and Councillor Gaul.

Colette added: “The group members themselves should be very proud of their tireless dedication to the project and such a fantastic achievement and we hope our supporters, funders and lots of children and families, come along and celebrate our opening with us.”
