Gary Mackay-Steven may harbour hopes of being a Wembley wizard but he knows he can only realise that dream by starring for Dundee United.
Scotland’s glamour friendly against England at the iconic London stadium looms large on the horizon for every member of Gordon Strachan’s squad.
Mackay-Steven may be a relative newcomer to the senior international scene but such an occasion could suit the exciting young Tannadice star.
So the August 14 match against the Auld Enemy will be pencilled into his diary and the Scots suddenly have self-belief thanks to their away victory over Croatia in a World Cup qualifier last month.
However, as he prepared to head off on United’s pre-season trip to Germany and Spain this morning, Mackay-Steven knows there is much to do for his club before he can start thinking about what might be with his country.
“The match against England at Wembley is obviously a massive one for the whole country and everyone will be engrossed in that,” he said.
“It hasn’t happened for a few years so it will be a huge occasion.
“It is a huge game and I think every Scottish player would want to be involved, but there is a lot of football to be played before that.
“I have really only had about three weeks off this summer because I was away with Scotland in Croatia. I don’t mind, though, because it was an unbelievable result for us to win in Zagreb.
“We were all overjoyed to win and I think we really deserved it. The plane coming back was a wee bit different to the one that went out.”
He said: “Going to Croatia we had nothing to lose and were still upbeat but on the way home we were all delighted and it was a really nice feeling.
“It was always my dream as a young lad to be involved with Scotland so it is special for me. It is brilliant to be away in amongst guys from the top level like the Premiership.
“It is a real honour to play for your country and I am extremely grateful to be in the squad.
“However, your bread and butter is your club season but you know if you do well then you might get the added bonus of international football.”
Mackay-Steven has, like everyone at United, welcomed back striker David Goodwillie with open arms on his return on loan from Blackburn Rovers.
It was Goodie’s switch to Rovers that freed up funds for then boss Peter Houston to offer Mackay-Steven his contract.
However the former Liverpool youth joked that he did not wish a quick exit on the striker because of that.
“I trained with him when I was on trial and I think it was mentioned at the time that we needed him to go for me to come in,” said a smiling Mackay-Steven.
“But I wasn’t urging him to head out the door, far from it!
“It was disappointing to see him leave just as I was getting started with United but I do know how good a finisher he is though.
“He has given everyone a massive boost and he has only been here a couple of days. It is great the buzz he has caused, especially among the fans.
The winger believes Goodie might be joining him in another squad, too, if he hits the ground running with the Tangerines.
“It is realistic to think he could be involved again with Scotland, why not?” said Mackay-Steven.
“Down at Blackburn he didn’t really get the breaks but I have no doubt that when he gets the chance to shine by playing every week for United that Scotland caps will come for him and he will be able to show just how good a player he is.”
