Morton 2 Cowdenbeath 0: Grant Adam believes Cowden deserved more

Cowdenbeath manager Colin Cameron believes the sending off made a difference.
Cowdenbeath manager Colin Cameron believes the sending off made a difference.

Ten-man Cowdenbeath suffered an opening day defeat at Cappielow but goalie Grant Adam believes the only way is up for the Fifers.

Reece Hands and Archie Campbell got the goals that mattered for the Greenock team although Adam reckons there was little between the sides.

He said: “It was really disappointing to lose 2-0. I didn’t think Morton were any better than us but unfortunately they’ve scored two goals and won the game.”

The first shot did not come until the 20th minute. Dougie Imrie ran forward before playing in Archie Campbell but the forward didn’t get the ball under control properly and could only hit his shot wide.

Two minutes later Reece Hands let fly with a dipping shot at goal but Adam held it well. Kane Hemmings then had a chance at the other end as he dribbled into the box and got a shot away but it was straight at the keeper.

Morton went ahead in the 26th minute when Hands had another shot from distance and this time Adam could only help the ball in.

In the 64th minute, Morton doubled their lead when Imrie slipped the ball through to Campbell, who made no mistake.

Cowdenbeath substitute Greig Stewart then had a chance as he got the ball on the edge of the box after some quick passing play but his shot was well saved.

In the dying minutes Thomas O’Brien received a second yellow after fouling McNeil.

Cowdenbeath manager Colin Cameron said: “I think the sending off made it look comfortable for them in the last few minutes.

“Football is all about fine margins and we should have had a penalty in the first half then we’ve had two chances in the second.

“What I felt we didn’t do well was close down the ball in our defensive third and that’s led to the two goals.”

Cameron was also unhappy with referee Euan Norris’ performance.

He said: “We get told to watch how we speak to referees but the way he spoke to some of my players today was a disgrace.”
