City pupils produce record-breaking exam performance

Dundee pupils have enjoyed a record-breaking year for exam results.

For the first time three-quarters of S4 pupils have passed at least five Standard Grades at general level, while almost half of S6 pupils left school with at least one Higher pass.

The figures show significant improvements in pass rates over the last five years.

Education director Michael Wood said: “It is clear that the focus on improving attainment is leading to improvements in results.

“The challenge for the education department, schools and staff is to ensure that the success is consolidated and extended.”

Pre-appeal data shows that 75% of S4s passed five or more Standard Grades at general level, up from 64% in 2008.

Over the same period, the percentage passing five or more at credit level rose from 23% to 27%.

Many pupils in S5 take Intermediate exams or opt to do Highers over two years rather than one. The council reckons that exam data for the end of S6 sets out a clearer picture of overall performance.

Mr Wood said: “This year’s performance has again seen improvements from last year’s results and are the highest ever recorded for Dundee.

“It is particularly pleasing to note that 22% of pupils now leave school with five Highers or more, while 33% leave school with three Highers or more.

“These measures show sustained improvement over the years with clear improving trends.”

Some 48% of S6 pupils passed at least one Higher this year, up from 34% in 2008, while 16% passed at least one Advanced Higher, up from 14% over the same period.

Education convener Stewart Hunter said: “The exam results achieved by Dundee pupils in 2013 are very encouraging. On almost all measures, our pupils have maintained or improved upon recent performances.

“There is a shared determination between the education department, teachers and families to ensure that even more young people can benefit from the drive to raise attainment.”

Mr Hunter said the results would be analysed to help schools plan for the new term.
