Twitter could become more commonplace in the developing world after the social network announced an app for new Firefox smartphones.
The social networking site has posted a blog revealing the news.
Many experts highlighted Twitter’s powers during the Arab Spring revolutions and the announcement could have wider implications around the world, as the social networking app is put into the hands of more people.
On Sunday, Mozilla revealed it had 17 network operators on board for its new Firefox smartphone operating system, aimed at the developing world, where Apple and Android phones have not gained much foothold.
The tie-ups mean Firefox phones will be available in a host of Latin American and Eastern European countries, as well as Spain, around summer time.
Network operator Three has also signed up, meaning Firefox phones will be available in the UK, likely to be pitched as “entry-level phones”.
Posting on Twitter’s blog, staff engineer Manuel Deschamps said the app works in much the same way as it does on other smartphones.
