The number of people employed by Fife Council has fallen by 12.1% from the first quarter of 2010 to the third quarter of 2012 one of the steepest declines in Scotland, figures show.
The decline from 23,200 to 20,400 compares with a decline of 11% within Dundee City Council (8,200 to 7,300); Angus Council down 5.3% (5,700 to 5,400) and Perth and Kinross Council down 3.3% (6,100 to 5,900).
Overall, the number of employees in Scotland’s 32 councils fell from 304,300 to 278,700 in. This is a fall of 23,600 or 8.4% since the general election in 2010.
The fall in the number of employees in Highland Council is the highest for a Scotland council, falling by 22% (2,900).
Harry Donaldson, GMB Scotland secretary, said: “The terrible extent of the cuts that the Tory/Liberal Government has imposed on local authorities is plain to see in these new statistics.
“In Scotland alone numbers employed by the 32 councils are down by 23,600 since the general election in 2010.
“These are the people who provide local services so cuts are a disaster for local communities and for those workers who have lost their jobs.
“Not a single council worker ever contributed anything to the financial crisis that they are being made to pay the price for,” he said.
