Ambitious plans for the demolition and redevelopment of a landmark Forfar church are moving forward through a public consultation programme.
Late last year St Margaret’s revealed a “vision” for the future of the West High Street church that could see the current building razed to make may for a new community-focused facility.
The scheme has emerged against the backdrop of potentially crippling costs to repair and maintain the church building.
A figure of some £300,000 may be required to treat rot and electrical issues and the church’s heating system costing £10,000 a year to run is close to collapse.
Initial drawings have proposed a curved 250-seat sanctuary much closer to the street, a multi-function hall to the rear and a volunteer-run cafe that could boost community participation and church membership.
A community survey is being posted on the church website, inviting Forfarians to go online and provide their views, with the session keen to gather a broad range of local opinion.
The survey which can be accessed at stmargaretschurchforfar.org is being managed by a locally-based business consultant, Colin Smith from the Glamis Consultancy, who will be undertaking research to investigate the scope for community facilities over the coming weeks.
“The research will also include a number of consultative focus groups,” Mr Smith said.
“These groups will meet during April and members of the public are invited to participate.”
Anyone wishing to take part should contact Maureen Fenton on 01307 464424, or via email at enquiries@stmargaretschurchforfar.org, or call Mr Smith on 01307 840343 or email colin@theglamisconsultancy.com.
“The church is encouraging as many local people as possible to complete our survey and to participate in the research groups,” Mr Smith added.
