Plans are afoot to launch a foodbank in Kirkcaldy.
The move comes as more organisations are reporting being contacted by people facing real hardship.
A co-organiser of the initiative, Kirkcaldy Central councillor Judy Hamilton said: “I have been contacted more and more recently by churches, community organisations and public agencies, all of whom are being approached by people who are experiencing hardship.
“Many people are having to choose between heating and eating and food poverty is increasing.
“Most of the community organisations and churches work hard to try and alleviate the situation by supplying food parcels as and when they can.”
Fellow organiser the Rev Marc Prowe, minister of Linktown Church and Auchtertool Kirk, said: “We would like to extend an invitation to all interested people, community groups and agencies to attend the meeting.
“A foodbank in Kirkcaldy would probably require a venue or venues with suitable storage space, a team of volunteers, possibly transportation means, good organisation and strong community support in the way of regular donations.
“It would be great to achieve joined-up thinking between businesses, individuals, charities, churches and agencies for wholesome provision.
“We would be very pleased to hear how people could help us in any of these areas.”
The meeting will also feature a talk from representatives of the Dunfermline Foodbank on their experiences and how they operate.
The initiative is being supported by Fife Community Food Project, a Fife Council community learning and development team and Fife Health and Wellbeing Alliance, which promotes food and health initiatives at community level.
A public meeting has been organised for Monday April 15 to discuss the proposals. The meeting will run from 6.30pm to 8pm and will be hosted by the Cottage Family Centre, based at 29-31 Cawdor Crescent, Templehall.
