AN ANGUS artist has been accepted into one of the UK’s most prestigious societies on his third and final attempt.
Jim Dunbar (64), from Carnoustie, has been elected an Associate Member of the Royal Watercolour Society, based in London’s Bankside Gallery.
He becomes one of just five Scottish members of the organisation, which only ever has 75 artists at any time.
Following his submission of an extensive folio of work, he was elected on merit by the current membership a tradition dating back to the society’s foundation more than 200 years ago.
Mr Dunbar trained in drawing and painting at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art, Dundee, and taught for 20 years in Angus schools.
He said that finally receiving recognition from his fellow artists was particularly meaningful after three applications.
“I have been fairly dogged over the years and I have continued to paint throughout my career which not a lot of teachers manage,” Mr Dunbar said.
“Nothing is better than having your peers patting you on the back and telling you that you are doing reasonable stuff.”
Since leaving teaching in 2000, he has devoted his time to painting.
