150 tons that’s how much rubble and rubbish was left behind by Travellers

Travelling people scattered 150 tons of rubble and rubbish in one of the worst cases of illegal dumping Tayside has seen.

The mess in the Claverhouse Industrial Estate close to the Dundee-Angus border was viewed with disgust yesterday by senior city councillor Willie Sawers.

“I am appalled at the mess left by the Travellers after their visit to this site,” the depute convener of policy and resources said.

“We estimate the cost of the clear-up to be several thousand pounds and that is something Dundee City Council can ill afford to pay out. We have taken legal action against the Travellers in relation to this site and will continue to do so against this sort of thing in the future.

“What has happened here is shocking. The amount of rubbish the Travellers have left is a risk to public health.”

Up to 30 caravans, cars and trucks set up an illegal camp in the estate on the west of the A90 Dundee-Forfar road last month, with the men apparently using it as a base for seeking landscaping and driveway work in the area.

Their vehicles were the latest models but the money they lavished on their equipment and accommodation was not reflected in the way they treated their surroundings.

Rubbish and rubble was dumped on and around Charles Bowman Avenue without any thought for the environment and some of the former was blown into the grounds of the local primary school.

The rubble broken tarred surfaces, bricks and paving appeared to be from excavated paths and driveways, and is debris that legitimate contractors must pay to discard at official disposal sites.
