For people who were out rolling their eggs, it could be in the running for least surprising news story of the year we have just “enjoyed” the coldest Easter day on record.
The lowest temperature was recorded in Braemar, which racked up a miserable -12.5C. The freezing conditions are in stark contrast to the average for this time of year of between 10C and 13C.
Unfortunately forecasters are predicting that the cold snap is set to last until mid-April. The Easter record comes after the entire month of March was provisionally declared the coldest in the UK since 1962.
Meanwhile, huge numbers of sun-starved Scots have kissed goodbye to the miserable conditions and headed abroad.
An estimated 1.7 million Britons have either left or are planning to leave the country in search of a holiday in warmer places over the Easter period.
Among the most popular destinations for this year’s getaway are Spain, Florida, Egypt, Tunisia and Turkey, all well known for offering spring sunshine.
But ski trips have also been in demand, with Geneva , a gateway to the Alps, among the favoured spots for tourists flying out of Britain.
