Abertay University’s new student leader has pledged to carry on his predecessor’s campaigning legacy.
Richard Cook will replace William Mohieddeen as University of Abertay Dundee Students’ Association (UADSA) president, following elections held last week.
He is a media, culture and society student and has served as a non-sabbatical executive committee officer for 2012/13.
The president-elect of UADSA said: “I’m overwhelmed to have been elected president. It’s been inspiring speaking to students during the last two weeks of campaigning.
“Now, I’m looking forward to work for students today, and generations to come, to reach their potential at Abertay.
“We shall be facing another challenging year. We will need to ensure the prospect of new legislation ensures an Abertay education is fair and accessible.
“We will also need to work closely with our colleagues at Dundee College and Dundee University students’ associations to work through the challenges the future will present.
“Abertay students have built a reputation as a fighting, campaigning student body over the last two years, and I have no doubt that we can make 2013-14 another successful and proud year for the UADSA.”
The elections were held over two weeks and this year the turnout was the highest yet. William Mohieddeen will step down at the end of June after completing his second term.
The sports student spearheaded a successful campaign which saw off the Scottish Government’s plans to merge Abertay and Dundee University. He has also fought letting agencies and landlords who charge students unlawful fees.
He said: “This is a very exciting time for the students’ association. All the candidates created a vibrant buzz amongst students for the Abertay student politics scene.
“I have confidence that Richard will be a success as president. His attitude to the student experience will inspire and his enthusiasm is contagious.”
Students also gave a resounding endorsement to vice-president Sarah Samson, who was re-elected for another term.
The psychology student said: “I’m delighted to have been re-elected.
“The last two weeks have been challenging, but the support from students I’ve talked to on the campaign trail has been inspiring. It’s going to be exciting working with the new team next year. I am confident that together we can tackle the issues that face student welfare and work to ensure Abertay becomes an inclusive and fair place to study.”
Mr Mohieddeen welcomed Ms Samson’s re-election, adding: “She is amongst the most determined, principled and devoted student campaigners I have met and will continue to be a success.
“The student movement will be grateful to have Sarah continue to be an elected officer and is one to keep an eye on for the future.”
