‘Innovative’ app to reach those affected by suicide

The first mobile phone app to reach people affected by suicide in Scotland was launched at Tannadice Park in Dundee.

Choose Life Angus and Dundee, working with Faff Digital, has created the app called Suicide? Help! which is available to download free from the Apple and Google app stores.

The app has been designed to reach people who would not normally contact services for help. The innovative way of providing help was inspired by the soaring use of social media and technology for self help.

The app was launched at Tannadice because of the continuing work between Choose Life and Dundee United FC.

Choose Life will also promote and advertise the app at the Dundee United v Aberdeen game on Saturday when a message will be sent to all supporters entering the ground with Bluetooth technology, inviting them to download the app.

The company hopes advertising will be replicated across a number of games in Angus this month.

Choose Life coordinator Gail Forrest said: “The Choose Life Steering Group were very keen to not only target our at risk group of middle-aged men but also the general community of Angus and Dundee.

“We agreed that an app was an innovative way of reaching people who would otherwise not normally engage with services.

“This way, people who are suicidal themselves, or know of someone who is suicidal, can download the app and know how and where to seek further help.”

Choose Life is encouraging all home support to ensure their Bluetooth is switched on when entering the ground and during the game as the device will roam around Tannadice.

Volunteers will be present at the Dundee United v Aberdeen game to hand out key cards to promote the new app and also be on hand for support and advice.

Work throughout the game with Dundee United will also take place in the form of an advert in the match day programme and Tannoy announcements before and during the game.
