Lorry driver fined for crash with cyclist on A90

An HGV driver who struck a cyclist while driving on the A90 between Dundee and Perth escaped a driving ban.

Walter Nicoll appeared at Perth Sheriff Court, where he was fined £450 and had his licence endorsed with five penalty points.

The 40-year-old had worked as an HGV driver for 18 years without incident before his involvement in the collision with William Currie on September 22 last year.

The court was told that his view had been affected by overtaking vehiclesand, on spotting Mr Currie, attempted to avoid him, only for the slipstream from his vehicle to “pull the cyclist into the lorry”.

Depute fiscal John Malpass said the complainer had been taken to Dundee’s Ninewells Hospital following the accident, where he received treatment for a fractured arm.

Nicoll, of Wallacetown Farm, Bridge of Earn, admitted driving carelessly at the sliproad leading to Inchture and causing a collision with a bicycle, causing its rider to fall.

His solicitor told the court: “His immediate concern was for the complainer and he stopped to check on his health. The cyclist was on his feet but complaining of an injury.

“Mr Nicoll later called the hospital to check on the complainer’s condition.”
