Sylvia Wilson (53) said: “I’m worried for the family. I hope they find him quickly.”
Mr Smith completed his PhD at University College London before taking up the post as an academic at St Andrews.
A spokeswoman for the Fife university said: “We are deeply concerned for Oliver and remain in close touch with his family. Our thoughts are very much with them and with him at this difficult time.”
Mr Smith had planned to climb Bla Bheinn on Saturday but the alarm was raised when he did not return to his holiday accommodation.
