A police appeal for witnesses after a train struck a vacuum cleaner in Angus has fallen on deaf ears.
British Transport Police has now made another public plea for information about the malicious vandalism, which took place on Saturday April 6.
No witnesses responded to the first appeal following the incident in which a train struck the vacuum cleaner that had been suspended from a footbridge on the approach to Arbroath.
The 18.42 Inverurie to Edinburgh service smashed into the appliance shortly after 8pm, causing it to fall on to the tracks.
The driver of the next freight train removed untied the electrical flex, that was still hanging from the footbridge, near Dens Road, with help from a member of the public.
A police spokesman said inquiries were continuing.
She said: “Officers are assisting British Transport Police by carrying out further enquiries in the area and engaging with the local community.”
The latest police probe follows an object being deliberately placed on the line at Inverkeilor in November, leading to the front wheels of a train leaving the track.
Despite a £25,000 reward for information put up by the rail industry, no one has been arrested.
North East MSP Alex Johnstone said the latest incident had involved a “worrying level of planning”.
He said: “Many people will fail to comprehend the utter stupidity of those responsible. This happens just months after lives were put in danger when an obstacle was placed on tracks near Inverkeilor.
“Hanging an object from a bridge in this way demonstrates, in my view, a worrying level of planning, which could have cost lives. Thankfully, no one was hurt, but in reality this could have had tragic consequences.
“The bottom line is that this was an utterly idiotic and criminal act and I would urge anyone with any information to contact the police so that these vandals can be brought to justice.”
