Royal Mail has said recent changes in the Dundee West and Dundee Central postal areas have gone smoothly.
A spokeswoman for the postal group made the assurances after West End councillor Richard McCready met officials to hear how new delivery methods have been implemented.
Mr McCready said he was keen to see if lessons had been learned after similar changes in Dundee East caused a backlog of 120,000 undelivered items back in 2010.
He said: “I wanted to be sure that these changes are properly resourced and that proper consultation has taken place with the workforce and their trade unions.
“I was reassured by the answers which I was given although, as ever, the proof of the pudding will be in the eating.”
From this week, postmen and women in Dundee Central have followed their colleagues in Dundee West, using new delivery methods and adopting revised routes.
The changes are being introduced on a phased basis. Royal Mail is writing to every address in the DD1 and DD6 postcode areas about the changes.
Spokeswoman Felicity MacFarlane said: “We assured Councillor McCready that recent changes in Dundee West and Dundee Central delivery offices have been implemented smoothly and were carried out in consultation with our staff and trade unions.
“Royal Mail has been carrying out its modernisation all over the country in order to accommodate the changing traffic mix more parcels and fewer letters.
“We need to modernise in order to maintain the universal service and we are committed to ensuring we can continue to deliver to 29 million addresses in the UK, six days a week, at a universal postage rate.
“We appreciate any changes may impact on our customers and careful planning is made to ensure that customers, both business and residential, continue to receive the best possible service from Royal Mail in Dundee.”
Under the new system Royal Mail will continue to deliver in the morning and for a longer period during the day. The company said many customers will continue to get their mail by lunchtime.
The time mail is received will depend on where a customer lives on the new delivery route.
Royal Mail delivery director Paul Kelly said: “The changes to delivery routes will mean that a member of our local and experienced team will still be delivering to our customers in Dundee Central.
“The local delivery team and I are fully committed to providing a high quality of service that is as reliable and friendly as customers have come to expect from Royal Mail in Dundee Central over many years.”
Mr McCready added: “If anyone is having problems with their mail deliveries, it would be good to hear from them.
“I will also be speaking to the trade union, in this case the CWU, to get their views. I support the Royal Mail and think that we should do all that we can to protect it.”
Fellow ward councillor Fraser Macpherson added: “I am pleased that Royal Mail gave assurances about no adverse effect on mail deliveries in Dundee West and it is important that residents in the DD1 part of my ward also see no deterioration in the quality of postal deliveries.
“I would urge any constituent with any concerns about their mail deliveries to get in touch.”
