Nicky Riley insists he has thrown his weight about more shopping for a tin of beans than for the “violent conduct” clash which earned him a red card against Hearts on Saturday.
The winger tangled with Jambos’ Kevin McHattie in the latter stages of the game with referee John Beaton deciding to send the Dark Blues player for an early bath.
After reviewing the incident, Riley’s boss John Brown decided it “wasn’t even purses, never mind handbags” and the club have launched an appeal.
Now, the player is hoping commonsense will prevail and he will be full of beans today after finding out the red card has been rescinded.
He said: “I couldn’t believe I was shown a red card. I didn’t think there was much to the whole thing.
“He just had a wee push at me and I had a push back. The funny thing was, the linesman who rushed on probably gave me the biggest shove and he nearly put me into the stand.
“I’m not sure if he thought it was a bigger deal than it was or what. But I certainly didn’t think I would be sent off for it.
“I’m not sure if the linesman’s reaction swayed the referee but it never for once crossed my mind that I would be sent off. It was the sort of coming together that happens all the time on the pitch so I am very disappointed, especially with the run we have been on.
“You want to be involved but I could be facing a suspension.
He added: “Thankfully, the club decided to appeal the decision and hopefully, like everyone else I have spoken to, once the SFA have replayed the incident they will decide there was nothing in it.
“To be honest, I have bumped into people harder in Tesco, especially if they are going for the last tin of baked beans!
“Stuff like that goes on all the time on the pitch. It was over in a second and there was nothing to it so it was just a shock. Hopefully commonsense will prevail once they have looked at it again.
“It would be very disappointing to get suspended for something so soft with only three games left. Like most of the lads here, I am out of contract at the end of the season and it is important that I am involved in the matches remaining.
“I really do not want to miss any games at this time of the year.”
