The latest evening of “chit chat” showcasing Dundee’s creative and cultural talents will take place this month.
The sixth Pecha Kucha where presenters talk through 20 images for 20 seconds each promises its usual mix of topics, which are kept secret until the night.
Pecha Kucha “chit chat” in Japanese is aimed at letting creative people talk and originally started in Tokyo in 2003. The event is organised and hosted by Creative Dundee.
Co-director Gillian Easson said the first Pecha Kucha in November 2011 was a journey into the unknown.
She said: “At first we weren’t sure what was going to happen.
“I thought it would be great if we got 50 people, but we got close to 200. Now we get 250 people coming along. People genuinely get a buzz from coming along and hearing other people speaking about their work.
“They leave saying they feel quite inspired to go off and do other things. People can approach the speakers. It’s not like a formal conference.”
Among the eight confirmed speakers so far is renowned Dundee fashion designer Hayley Scanlan, who has just previewed her work during Tartan Week in New York.
The event also includes the Rusty Hip Collective, which aims to unify and strengthen the local music scene, and Lynne Duffus, the owner of Lovely Things interiors shop.
Gillian said: “It gives the audience the chance to hear what is going on locally and feel inspired.
“We often get asked who comes along to Pecha Kucha nights. There is a strong contingent of students and creatives but also people who are just interested in what’s happening in Dundee.
“We have had the director of the V&A at Dundee speak alongside an up-and-coming textiles designer. That is the beauty of Pecha Kucha, it puts everyone on an equal platform. There are no keynote speakers.”
All the presentations are available to view online later. Pecha Kucha takes place in Chamber East in Panmure Street on May 21. Information on tickets can be found at creativedundee.com
