George Harris has insisted he acted in good faith in meeting potential Dundee investor John Nelms to discuss the proposed Texan-backed buyout of the club.
Harris, who is chairman of the committee that looks after the Dundee FC Supporters’ Clubs’ Association, joined fellow supporters including Dave Craig, Graeme Pert, Willie Douglas and Craig Hill to hold talks with Nelms during the American’s short visit to Scotland before news of the joint Scots-US plan to purchase a controlling interest in the Dark Blues became public.
Nelms subsequently revealed that he had met with a group of fans from the Dundee Supporters’ Association, which was a direct reference to Harris and his quorum.
However, in a statement issued on Friday by the Dundee FC Supporters’ Society the body that owns a majority shareholding in Dundee FC and incorporates the supporters’ club committee it was stated that Harris acted unofficially and that the DSA does not exist as it was disbanded in 2010 when it came under the umbrella of the DFCSS.
Harris was unrepentant about meeting Nelms and stressed that he and his colleagues did so for the purest of reasons.
He said: “I feel I have done nothing wrong at all. Everything was done for the good of Dundee FC and the fans, as far as I am concerned.
“I knew John Nelms after meeting him informally at a game previously and we got on really well. So he knew me personally.
“I went along with a group of fellow supporters to see what he had to say and it was all done in good faith.
“During the meeting with him, we asked him some hard questions about the proposal and I don’t regret trying to find out what he had to say.
“Also, as the group representing the 27 supporters clubs we may officially be the DFCSCA but I still call ourselves the DSA, perhaps because it’s easier to say.”
Meanwhile, Friday passed with neither acceptance nor outright rejection of the buyout proposal being championed by Dundee directors Bill Colvin and Steve Martin, as well American duo Nelms and John Keyes.
Instead, the supporters’ society will proceed with their plan to put the issue to a vote of their members on June 15.
DFCSS says it would like more information from the would-be investors so the details can be put to fans at that special meeting.
