Less than a week after suffering a stroke while onstage during a gig, Dundee musician John Curran is back at home recovering and planning his next musical project.
John, 50, was playing with his band the Levee Breakers at their Gardyne Theatre show on Saturday when he started feeling unwell. The guitarist was taken to hospital by ambulance and the show had to be curtailed.
John’s shocked wife Linda, who was in the audience with other family members, said she knew “straight away” that something was wrong. His bandmates told the crowd that the show had to be stopped while they telephoned for an ambulance.
Speaking at his home on Sunday, John said he was feeling good but tired and had been taking it easy over the weekend.
“It’s just what I’ve got to do,” he said.
John admits it will take a good while for him to recover completely and, as befits his quick release, says he would prefer to look forward now rather than concentrate on what happened.
He posted a message of thanks on his Facebook page telling his friends he was home and praising medical staff for their “amazing attention” to him.
He also admits being humbled by the hundreds of goodwill message he’s received since he was taken ill.
“It’s been an emotional time, very surreal, but I have been really touched by people’s best wishes. The guys in the band have been brilliant. They’re fantastic guys, and I can’t talk highly enough of the nurses and doctors and the porters at the hospital.”
Asked what lies ahead, John says this is a good time for him to set his mind to projects which were on the back burner.
“I’m a musician at heart and I’ll always be doing music. I released an album years ago and I’ve written another album so I would love to record that now.
“And the Levee Breakers as well I want to do another gig at the Gardyne. They were brilliant on the night and I want to put that to rights.”
