Dundee’s rival football fans joined together to play a charity match at Dens Park at the weekend.

Rivals4Charity organised the game between fans of Dundee FC and Dundee United FC, with the kick-off at 1pm on Saturday.

This is the first year organiser Scott Moncrieff has brought the event to Dundee and the game was such a success it will be back next year.

He said: “It went really well and we couldn’t have had a better day with a crowd of around 300 people turning up to cheer on their teams.

“Dundee United won 5-3 but they were 5-0 up at one stage before Dundee pulled it back. It was a really good game and everyone played in the right spirit.

“One of the aims is to give football fans the chance of a lifetime to live out their dreams and play in a proper stadium.”

About 40 fans who applied to take part were given the opportunity to attend a training session where they were whittled down to 18 players on each side by coaches from the two football clubs.

Scott has been running the event with Heart and Hibs fans in Edinburgh for seven years and the eighth clash will take place next week.

He said: “At Edinburgh we have about 100 people from each side apply to take part. The Edinburgh event has grown a lot over seven years and I am sure Dundee will grow as well.

“Hopefully the players who got involved this year will talk about it and next year their friends will want to get involved next year too.”

All proceeds from the event, expected to be upwards of £7,000, will go towards the Homeless World Cup, which Rivals4Charity paired up with this year.

The plan is to expand the concept around the UK, giving fans a great experience while raising money for charity.

Scott said: “The money raised will help the Homeless Foundation massively.”

He also thanked everyone who took part, in particular Grant Cook from Dundee FC, Colin Stewart from Dundee United FC, as well as the main sponsor Aberfoyle Childcare Services.
