Nursery friends offered support after death of Fife boy Callum in Turkey

An investigation has been launched into the tragic death of a young Fife boy on holiday in Turkey.

Three-year-old Callum Salmond is thought to have drowned in a hotel swimming pool during a family break in the resort of Belek.

The youngster had been staying at the Voyage Belek Hotel and Spa Complex on the Turkish Riviera with mum Donna Ness, 31, dad Graeme Salmond, 32, and baby brother Max when the accident happened at the weekend.

He died on Tuesday morning in hospital.

The Kirkcaldy family had travelled with Thomas Cook, which is now investigating the tragedy along with other authorities.

Ulrich Sperl from Thomas Cook UK and Ireland offered his condolences and added: “The welfare of our customers is our top priority and a health and safety team is conducting a thorough investigation into the incident in collaboration with the relevant authorities.

“Our team in the resort continue to offer every support and assistance to the deceased’s loved ones. In the interests of customer confidentiality, we are not at liberty to provide any further details at this time.”

Meanwhile, Callum’s nursery friends were being given the chance to remember him in a special story session today, when they will have the chance to ask questions about the youngster.

He started Strathallan Nursery in January, after leaving St Brycedale Playgroup.

In a letter to parents, head teacher Isabelle McBain said nursery pupils would be taken to a forest where they would be read a story called Always and Forever, designed to explain the loss of a friend to young children without frightening them.

“I know all my staff will endeavour to respond as sensitively as possible to any of their questions,” she said.

The move follows advice from the school chaplain and an educational psychologist.

A special prayer service has already been held in Callum’s memory at Kinglassie Parish Church as family members live in the village.

There was no answer at the family home in Kirkcaldy yesterday.

However, parents of children at the nursery said they were still in shock at the news.

One dad described Callum as “a happy wee boy” and said his death was “desperately sad”.

A mum who had just dropped her daughter off said: “You just think about your own kids and it makes you shudder it’s your worst nightmare.”

Donna works as a marketing manager for Business Gateway in Edinburgh and had been looking forward to going on holiday.

Graeme works as a service parts manager for the Ford Centre in Cupar.

His colleagues declined to comment.

A spokeswoman for the Foreign Office said: “We are aware of the death of a British national in Turkey on May 28 and are providing the family with consular assistance at this time.”
