Coal carriers to raise bags of cash for Kelty pups

Money well spent: it will take tens of thousands of pounds to train these puppies to be guide dogs then support them.

Hardy competitors in the Scottish Coal Carrying championship are used to running through Kelty.

But this time they’re also going to be competing for Kelty. This Kelty isn’t the former mining village, though, but a Guide Dogs Scotland pup of the same name.

Guide Dogs Scotland has been chosen as the official charity of the annual race, held this year on Saturday June 29.

The Kelty Coal Race is a test of strength and speed, as the runners carry a sack of coal along the 1km course and this year they are required to seek sponsorship which will be donated to Guide Dogs Scotland.

The charity will also hold a collection during the race and money raised will be used to name a guide dog puppy Kelty.

It costs around £50,000 to train and support each guide dog through its working life. The charity receives no Government funding for the guide dogs service, which relies entirely on public generosity.

“It’s fantastic that the Kelty Coal Race organisers have chosen Guide Dogs Scotland as their official charity,” said Guide Dogs community fundraiser Nikki Neesam.

“By doing so they are helping to make a real difference to the lives of blind and partially sighted people in the community.

“The race is always a superb day in Kelty and raising money to name a puppy after the village will highlight the fantastic contribution from Kelty folk.”

The day will start off with the children’s race at noon and the mascots’ race shortly afterwards.

The main event the men’s and women’s races will start at 12.25pm. Event organiser, Michael Boyle, encouraged people to enter.

“We have competitors from far and wide because it really is a race with a difference,” Mr Boyle said.

“It’s unlike any other race you will ever do and you’re promised a strong turn out and warm welcome from local people on race day.

“We’re happy to support Guide Dogs Scotland and their work, which makes such a difference to the lives of people who are blind and partially sighted across Scotland.”

No entries are accepted on the day but places are still available by calling Mr Boyle on 07715 304798. Visit www.guidedogsscotland.org.uk for more details.
