Olympic canoeists brave the icy rapids on the River Tay

Spectators lined the banks of the River Tay at Grandtully at the weekend to watch some of the country’s top canoeists brave the icy rapids.

The race action was also captured by a camera crew from the BBC 2 Adventure Show. Paddlers from across Britain had descended on Highland Perthshire for Premier Division ranking races.

Among those taking part were Olympic medallists from London 2012, Tim Baillie and Etienne Stott, and silver medallists David Florence and Richard Hounslow.

In the ladies class, Olympians Lizzie Neave and Fiona Pennie from Crieff battled it out for top honours.

For local paddlers it was the culmination of a hard winter’s training as they competed for places in the Great Britain Junior Canoe Slalom Team.

The slalom event was organised by the Breadalbane Canoe Club committee.

The club, which is based in Aberfeldy and trains regularly at Grandtully, first started offering slalom opportunities to its members in 2007 and now has paddlers representing the club at national and international level.

Perth and Kinross Council’s sports development team has been working closely with the club and the Scottish Canoe Association to create an Olympic Legacy from the medal winning success of Team GB in 2012.

Pupils from local secondary schools were also taking part. The dry, bright weather helped to turn the event into a spectator occasion for visitors to Perthshire during the Easter holiday weekend.

“It has been beautiful the sun has been shining though it was still cold,” said one of the organisers.

“We have had a reasonable crowd on both days.”
