Jail warning for man who threw sword and directed abuse at Muslim men during fire

A man who hurled a sword at three Muslim men after they escaped from a fire has been told he could be facing jail.

Grant Robertson (28) launched a sickening tirade at the three men screaming ”if it wasn’t for they Muslim b******* we’d all have jobs” as police tried to gain entry to his flat.

When he was arrested Robertson told police: ”I threw my sword out the window at them. I wish it got them in the throat.”

Dundee Sheriff Court heard Mahmut Turk had been praying in his flat in Craigmount Road at around 12.10am on January 26 when he smelled smoke. He rushed into the hallway and saw thick black smoke billowing into the property.

Mr Turk awoke room-mate Yusuf Akhaya, who called the emergency services. The pair then rushed from the flat, and managed to beat back the fire using wet towels and a tracksuit jacket.

They then met their other room-mate, Emre Sezen, outside as they waited for the fire brigade.

But as they stood in the street Robertson climbed out of his first-floor window and began his tirade.

Robertson, of Buttars Loan, pleaded guilty to a charge of acting in a racially aggravated manner. He also admitted a second charge of assaulting the three men.

Depute fiscal Trina Sinclair told the court: ”Police attended with the fire brigade and went in to make enquiries. The accused then came to the window of the property and started shouting at the three men, saying things like: ‘I will kill you all’ and ‘Muslim b*******’.

”The accused left the window for a short time and came back, exiting the window and standing on the window ledge. He was holding a large metal sword which he threw in the direction of the men.

”Police were inside and could hear a disturbance. Officers could see the accused hanging out the window shouting and swearing things such as ‘Muslim b******* f*** off back to your own country’.

”Police attended his property and spoke to him through the door, but he continued shouting and swearing and making racial remarks like ‘Muslim b******* I wish they died’.

”He also said ‘If it wasn’t for all they Muslim b******* we’d all have jobs’. He was arrested and said ‘I f****** threw my sword out the window at them. I wish I got them in the throat’.

”He was taken to police headquarters and charged with attempted murder. In reply he said ‘I never attempted to murder if I was going to murder him I would do. Tell the p**** to go back to his own country’.”

Sheriff Elizabeth Munro released Robertson on bail ahead of sentencing on December 10.

She said: ”That doesn’t mean I’m not considering a custodial sentence.”
