Forfar lay claim to second place

Forfar lay claim to second place

Forfar moved into second spot with a winning performance at Livingstone that had Dick and Ian Campbell singing the praises of their squad.

“It was a fantastic game Forfar were marvellous,” said assistant manager Ian.

It did not start out too promisingly for Forfar when they were caught cold by a De Vita goal 55 seconds into the game.

“We were caught napping and that was disappointing,” said Campbell.

“Then we scored three goals.”

The first was a 13th minute break-away by Ian Harty, the second in 21 minutes came from an Ian Campbell free-kick, and the third was reward for another Harty run.

“They then threw everything at us bar the kitchen sink,” said coach Campbell.

Winters pulled one back in 33 minutes, but then Forfar closed everything up.

“In the second half we were never in danger,” added Campbell.

“It was a thoroughly professional performance.

“As the game went on we got stronger and stronger and looked more likely to score in the counter attack.

“It keeps up our run of results and the mood is quite buoyant.

“Our away form has been terrific all year and we deserve to be in second spot.”MontroseMontrose’s brief spell off the bottom of the league ended when they lost at home to Annan Athletic and fellow strugglers Elgin grabbed three points against Albion Rovers.

The wheels came off after four minutes when Stephen McNally claimed, with some justification, that he had ushered the ball over the bye-line before Stephen Sloan nipped in to cut it across the face of the goal for Chris Jardine to net.

Eight minutes later Daryl Nicol tried to dribble out of defence, lost possession and David Cox who had briefly been on Montrose’s books when he left Kilmarnock made the most of the opportunity.

From then on, and particularly in the second half when they pushed three up front, Montrose gave as good as they got.

But the damage was done and a stunning late goal from McNally failed to add lustre to a poor game that echoed much of Montrose’s season.

Annan manager Harry Cairney admitted his team were “hanging in at the death.” He added, “We started well, but then they put us under pressure.”

Montrose assistant manager Jim Moffat said, “We never really started and we were killed by individual errors in the first half.

“Both their goals came when we gave the ball away. I don’t think either keeper was bothered by anything thereafter.

“In the second half we didn’t score the goal we needed early enough and it came in injury time.”

Montrose played the second half without Alan Campbell, who was taken to hospital after he took a knock in the face.

“We are having his cheekbone checked but we hope it will be an unchanged squad for the return match at Annan on Tuesday,” said Moffat.
