A respected member of the Highland Perthshire community, Margaret Hewitt, has died aged 97.
Mrs Hewitt, who served with the Territorial Army during the second world war, was a long-time supporter of National Trust for Scotland.
Born in Sheffield on August 13, 1913, she spent her early years in India, where her father served in the army.
When she returned to the United Kingdom she lived in Staffordshire and completed her education with a secretarial course, a skill which led her to work for the Spode company.
It was while working for Spode that she met future husband Fred Hewitt, the firm’s export manager.
The couple married in Stoke-on-Trent on October 23, 1939, shortly after war was declared.
Both soon joined the TA and were separated for much of the remainder of the conflict. Mr Hewitt was taken prisoner-of-war in early 1940 while Mrs Hewitt became a lieutenant colonel in the Women’s Royal Army Corps (WRAC).
After the war, Mr Hewitt went to medical school in Liverpool and joined a GP practice in Formby.
It was at this time that Mrs Hewitt discovered her natural skills with flowers and plants, having completed a Constance Spry course in London.
Her talents were soon recognised and she was responsible for the successful major flower festival at the Anglican Cathedral in Liverpool in 1970.
She also continued her interest in the WRAC (TA), founding the peacetime Lancashire Battalion for which she was awarded an OBE.
In 1973 Mr and Mrs Hewitt rented a cottage near Pitlochry with a view to it becoming their retirement home. A couple of years later they bought the property.
Mrs Hewitt became a council member of the National Trust for Scotland and masterminded a flower festival at Blair Castle to raise funds for the relocation of the Pitlochry Theatre.
She also became life vice-president and associate of honour of the National Association of Flower Arrangement Societies.
Mrs Hewitt’s husband cared for her at home until it became necessary for her to receive full-time residential care at Rosemount Care Home in Blairgowrie. Mr Hewitt died in August 2007. The couple had no children.
