The Scottish Court Service will use a public meeting to say why it wants to close Cupar Sheriff Court.
Residents are being encouraged to attend the event in County Hall, in the County Buildings, on Wednesday at 6.45pm for a 7pm start.
Councillor Margaret Kennedy, who organised the meeting, said: ”The meeting is a public meeting convened by me in my capacity as local councillor and convener of the Fife and Forth Valley Community Justice Authority.
”In attendance to support me will be senior officers from criminal justice, social work service, Fife Council and we hope that NHS Fife will also be present.”
Mrs Kennedy said a representative from the Scottish Court Service would give a presentation and there would be an opportunity for the public to ask questions.
She added: ”For many, the closure of our court is about criminal proceedings. However, it is very much more than that. It would affect small business claims, mental health welfare hearings, custody or divorce hearings.
”We need to also recognise the potential effects on our local economy through the risk of losing some local businesses with direct connections to the court system.”
Controversial plans to reform the courts service follow the Scottish Government’s decision to cut the Scottish Court Service budget by £52.3m over four years.
The service proposes to axe Cupar, Forfar and Stonehaven sheriff courts and Kirkcaldy’s justice of the peace court.
Earlier this year, the results of a consultation revealed there were serious concerns that closing sheriff courts would hit society’s most disadvantaged.
Court staff, civil servants, volunteers and members of the Crown Office, Procurator Fiscal Service and Scottish Prison Service were invited to air concerns about plans to reform Scotland’s courts in May and June.
