Plans to move a historic monument in Cupar have been lodged.
The Mercat Cross, a symbol of the medieval burgh’s prosperity located at the heart of the town, could be moved from its current location at the junction of Crossgate and St Catherine Street.
The plans are part of a proposed £1.6 million project to rejuvenate the town centre, which would include the scrapping of the unpopular traffic light system at Crossgate.
Although the monument would be moved 10m from its current location, plans to move it at all have infuriated members of the local community council.
Douglas Provan, secretary, said previously: “I always felt the cross was one of the main parts of central Cupar.
“It shouldn’t be stuck on a pavement.
“To shove it on to the pavement would be absolutely appalling.
“If we pedestrianised the Crossgate, then this problem would be solved.”
Presented to Cupar in 1683, the Mercat Cross is a symbol of the town’s right to hold a market.
It has been moved before, having been transported to its current location in 1897 after having been placed on top of the Hill of Tarvit for a period during the 19th century.
