An independence campaigner who once shared a stage with First Minister Alex Salmond has called for a “social audit” of Scotland.
Poet Kevin Williamson was heavily criticised for his comments, which he later admitted “sound bit fascistic.”
Williamson Tweeted: “Time has come for a social audit of institutional Scotland. Who are these people? Who do they speak for? What class, demographic, ethos?”
He later posted: “Reading back the words ‘social audit’ do sound bit fascistic, even if not meant that way. Ah well. Live & learn.”
A spokesman for the anti-independence Better Together campaign said: “These comments are utterly despicable and will appall anyone who reads them. We can only hope that everyone in the separatist movement quickly distances themselves from this brand of ultra-nationalism.”
A Yes Scotland spokesman said: “Scotland is a very welcoming country and Yes Scotland has many supporters from diverse backgrounds.”
He added: “Yes Scotland is an inclusive, positive movement which includes anyone who shares our belief in an independent Scotland.”
