FIFERS HAVE been warned to beware of home insulation contractors wrongly claiming to be working for the council.
Fife Council is working with the Everwarm Group and Carillion Energy Services to offer free insulation to householders funded by the Scottish Government’s universal home insulation scheme.
However, there have been reports of other firms telling potential clients they are representing the local authority.
Fife Council senior housing manager Alan Russell said: “Any number of other contractors can legitimately work in Fife, but they should not be claiming that they are doing so on behalf of Fife Council.”
Trading Standards service manager Alan Hamilton said: “Any business that falsely claims to be working for or is approved by Fife Council commits a criminal offence.
“If a member of the public is suspicious of a firm that makes such claims they should contact Trading Standards via Citizens Advice Consumer Service on 08454 040506.”
Carillion and Everwarm staff working on behalf of the council will carry photographic identification.
Home Energy Scotland hotline manager Chris Morris said: “Rather than wait for someone to knock on the door you can simply call the Home Energy Scotland hotline to book an appointment with the Fife Council appointed contractor.”
The number is 0800 512012.
