MAJOR ROADWORKS are under way to install a new £1 million electricity network which will secure the future power supply to Dundee’s city centre.
Disruption to traffic is expected for the next four months on a series of major roads between Dundee and Broughty Ferry, with closures and delays expected.
Scottish and Southern Energy is carrying out the work to replace two 33,000-volt underground cables which date to the 1960s.
Dundee City Council confirmed there would be some closures while roads are being dug up, with Arbroath Road, Douglas Road, Claypotts Terrace, Queen Street, Brooke Street, St Vincent Street and Kemnay Place all affected.
The work will be carried out by SSE’s Scottish Hydro Electric Power Distribution wing, in partnership with the council and Balfour Beatty Utilities.
A spokesman for the company said the project needed to be carried out to ensure the future of the city’s electricity supply.
The work got under way on Monday with temporary traffic lights set up in Queen Street and Claypotts Road while drilling is carried out for a trial hole investigation.
Starting next week, there will be temporary traffic lights on Arbroath Road for three weeks while workers lay out new ducts for the cabling.
