Fife Council considers new for-profit waste management group

Fife Council could be about to set up an arm’s-length organisation to offer waste treatment and disposal services.
If the plans are given the green light, a new company owned by the council will be established and up to 55 employees will be transferred.
The change could generate between £12.1 million and £15.6m for the council over the first five years, according to a report which will go to the scrutiny committee next week.
The document also identifies a potential to earn money from marketing consultancy services in climate change and zero waste.
Councillor Linda Erskine, executive member for finance and corporate services, said: “The report which is to go before councillors on January 15 is an exciting opportunity that has the potential to deliver much-needed income at a time when budgets are under pressure.
“Employee briefings have already taken place. We will also work closely with employees and the trades unions over the next few months to address any concerns.”
